Learning Assistance Center (LAC)

The Learning Assistance Center, located on the second floor, room 704, of the Learning Resource Center building at the Indian Wells Valley campus, provides a variety of support services for students enrolled in academic and vocational courses. The campuses at KRV and ESCC campuses at Bishop and Mammoth also have LAC's with Tutoring and GED Preparation for students.

Tutoring

Free tutoring is available from trained tutors in almost all subjects. Please call us at (760) 384-6161 for more information or come in to fill out a tutor request form. The hours are 8:00am - 9:00pm Monday through Thursday and 8:00am - 12:00pm on Friday. Tutoring is provided individually or in groups based on student need. Students needing assistance are invited to visit the center for more information or call for assistance. Fill out a Tutor Request Form today to request tutoring.

Tutoring is offered on campus and online to registered Cerro Coso students. Students need a referral from their class instructor, a counselor or LAC faculty member. A faculty member or counselor can fill out the Tutoring Referral Form to refer a student to the LAC for tutoring. Once a student is assigned to a tutor, they need to sign up for INST C004 (Supervised Tutoring), before their first tutoring session. Students receiving tutoring are expected to come with books, syllabus, class assignments, and they should be able to articulate specific coursework questions to their tutor.

Tutor/Lab Aides are on duty during open hours, ready to tutor in a variety of subjects and are available for drop-in tutoring. Visit the Staff and Tutors page for more information and hours for our tutors. All lab aides are also trained tutors and may assist students with basic computer needs or specific tutoring needs.

Cerro Coso also Offers Supplemental Instruction for specific courses—usually science courses and targeted tutoring at instructor request. Targeted Tutoring occurs when a tutor goes into a classroom to perform a specific task such as taking notes and then students come to the LAC to meet with a tutor about the content of their notes.

Becoming a Tutor

Students who wish to become a tutor need a referral from an instructor in the subject area they wish to tutor. In addition, they will need to register for EDUC C170, our tutor training course. Tutors must be registered for a minimum of six units at Cerro Coso. Tutors are paid as student workers. All referrals for student tutors are sent to the LAC; however, a referral does not guarantee a student will be a tutor.

On campus tutors who have completed 25 hours of tutoring and have been evaluated are eligible to receive Level 1 International Tutor Certification from CRLA-College Reading and Learning Association. Cerro Coso Community College is a participant in this program of certification. Supplemental Instruction and Targeted Tutoring also requires Tutor Training for employment.

GED Preparation

Free, self-paced, individualized GED Preparation is available to students who enroll in classes at Cerro Coso. Cerro Coso no longer offers GED testing or GED Prep as a class.

ESL/English Assistance

Tutoring for English is available.

CLEP Exams

Students may prepare for and take CLEP examinations in order to gain college credit for subjects in which the students can prove mastery. CLEP exams cost $102.00 unless the student is active military.

Exam Proctoring

Proctoring for CC students is Monday -Thursday 11:00am - 4:00pm and 5:00pm - 9:00pm. Call (760) 384-6161 at the IWV campus.

Proctoring of exams from other institutions is available as well. Students should contact Sherri Windish (see information below). There is a fee of $25.00 for other college's exams and assessments.

Exam Proctoring is by appointment Students must bring a picture ID to the exam, and will be asked to turn off electronic equipment with the exception of approved calculators.

We also proctor for online courses.
